Surfin USA Lyrics-A Closer Look

The other day I was thinking about the Beach Boys and how they put several San Diego beaches on the map. Did you know that five of the fifteen beaches are found in San Diego? I thought it would be enjoyable to take a closer look at the lyrics of Surfin USA.

First of all, most websites that provide the song lyrics misspell two top-rated surfing beaches, so I am here to be the official spell-checker for you.

  • Trestles-not Trestle
  • San Onofre- not San Ahofree
  • Swami’s- not Swamies

Ok, that was satisfying!

Also, for fun, I will be picking a prime photo for each San Diego location to help you can capture a feel of the beaches the Beach Boys were singing about

Who Wrote The Song?

There seems to be a bit of controversy behind who wrote the Beach Boys’ song- Surfin’ USA. The story goes that Brian Wilson, the only wave-rider in the band, got the idea for the song after hearing “Sweet-Little-Sixteen” by Chuck Berry. The single was published in 1962 and achieved number one on the Billboard Charts in 1963.

  1. My comment does not center on the place names in “Surfin’ USA.” Your listing here is authoritative and should be noted by all.

Rather, I want to congratulate you for not making the error that nearly every lyric site I’ve checked so far makes.

Contrary to what you see on these sites, the line in the second verse is the one you have here. That is, “We’re on safari to stay” — NOT “We’re on ‘surfari’ to stay.”

There is no such word as “surfari,” and there is no initial “r” sound in the word Mike Love sings. Furthermore, The Beach Boys’ hit that immediately precedes this one is “Surfin’ Safari.”

This kind of nonsense is Exhibit A for why you should never, ever trust online lyric sites. The ones that actually LISTEN to the songs whose lyrics they post are few and far between. Most just copy lyrics from other sites and figure their job is done.

So, double kudos for what you’ve written here!
